This may seem harsh…

Ciao and Sacred Sunday to you:

How was your week? What’s been happening in your world?

Just saying up front, I’ve had a hell of a week. Not necessarily in a “bad” way.

More like the cook pot has been stirred in my body, mind and heart.

I feel somewhat like Rumi’s chickpea simmering, waiting to burst open.

What came up of for me were several juicy conversations; one in particular on the difference between what it means to be “speaking your truth”, “living your truth” and being “genuine.”

And whether they’re the same thing.

The online dictionary defines…

Truth:
the true or actual state of a matter
conformity with fact or reality

Genuine:
free from pretense, affectation, or hypocrisy; sincere
possessing the claimed or attributed character, quality, or origin; not counterfeit; authenticreal

The thing is – the world you and I are living in today, with social, gender and racial inequality, political and environmental disagreement, plus religious and spiritual belief differences, one can just about lose their mind.

Over stimulation, concern and feeling out of control, all the while seeking what’s “true” in a world that’s gone a bit mad, wreaks havoc on your nervous system.

Let alone trying to nail down what your personal “truth” is in the scheme of things. And then trying to determine if it’s appropriate or even your responsibility to share your truth.

Here’s where I landed – I’m done trying to analyze what my truth is. And quite frankly I’m not that interested in or concerned about what your truth is either.

Harsh?

No, not at all. You want to know why?

Because truth changes. Morphs. Evolves.

Truth is subjective.

And what is truth anyway?

The world in not flat. The sun does not revolve around the earth. A college education does not guarantee a dream career. And furthermore, happiness does not come from external things.

What concerns me more than my truth is whether I am being genuine.

What I’m more interested in then your truth, is whether you’re being genuine with me and anyone you’re in relationship with, from your auto mechanic and dog groomer to your family, friends, and community.

My truth may not be your truth. Your truth may not be mine. And that my friend, is unequivocally OK.

What’s even more important than truth, is can we be genuine with one another?

It’s a distinction that I believe strongly needs to be examined by each of us.

Or we will never be able to sit down at the table of curiosity and open heartedness.

If our underlying or unconscious agenda is to convince the other of our truth, well you can see how well that’s gone.

Rather, if we’re genuine with one another we organically are building a bridge.

If we sit at the table with a genuineness and a sense of being real with one another, then maybe, just maybe, compassion, understanding, a shift in perspective and a willingness to work for the common good might begin to percolate.

And who knows, maybe we’ll experience a little joy in the process.

With love and appreciation, xoxo Paulette
